When the illustrator is bored, and there are several inches of snow on the ground, what better time to break out the sculptor chops? And what could be farther from the snowy plains of Kansas than something befitting Easter Island? The neighbors absolutely love this, and a small-level competition even broke out. LOL!

The Winter Solstice

Today (December 21st, 2011) is the Winter Solstice, or shortest day of the year. Because of the axial tilt of our planet as it spins around the sun, this day marks the 24-hour period in which the Northern Hemisphere receives the least amount of sunlight, and coincidentally, warmth. Though the length of days will begin to increase from here, Winter will not be shaken so easily. We will not likely see a great deal of warming until the Vernal Equinox occurs, midway through March. Happy holidays to all of my fans, from this illustrator in Kansas. Never one to throw away a piece of perfectly good paper, I enlist my colored pencils, markers, Sharpies, and copious amounts of Pentel correction fluid, and find the reason for the season. Enjoy!

Happy Birthday Mark Twain

Today (November 30, 2011) would have been Mark Twain’s 176th birthday, had he discovered the fountain of youth that is. Born Samuel Clemens, the author and humorist lived long enough to see the face of the United States change considerably, with immigration on the rise and a shift from an agricultural to a manufacturing economy. His pen name (mark twain) was taken from a familiar cry aboard Mississippi river boats of the time which meant the water was 12 feet deep, enough clearance for a boat.

Power Lines… Shocking!

Teach your children to give a very wide berth to power lines that have fallen during a storm. Without professional equipment it’s nearly impossible to tell if a line is “live” or not, and contact with a downed electrical wire can be fatal.
