Our avian friends are attracted to the warning lights (installed to warn aircraft) and often fly around them until they fall to the ground, exhausted. Some cities actually dim their lights during periods of heavy migration.

Today (December 21st, 2011) is the Winter Solstice, or shortest day of the year. Because of the axial tilt of our planet as it spins around the sun, this day marks the 24-hour period in which the Northern Hemisphere receives the least amount of sunlight, and coincidentally, warmth. Though the length of days will begin to increase from here, Winter will not be shaken so easily. We will not likely see a great deal of warming until the Vernal Equinox occurs, midway through March. Stay warm! (Click the image below for a larger version.)

In 1850’s England, physician John Snow decided that authorities were off track when declaring that a deadly outbreak of cholera (also known as Black Death) was due to breathing foul air. Instead, he was able to track the disease to a public well near Broad Street in the Soho district of London. He also pointed out that the well was drawing its water from the much-polluted River Thames. Gross!
