Salt Shaker Shenanigans

Anyone up for a good practical joke? Take the lids off the salt and pepper shakers, then cover each opening with a small piece of plastic wrap. Put the lids back on, making sure that no plastic shows around the edge (trim if necessary). When dinner time comes around, watch with glee as your “victim” tries furiously to dispense the seasonings. The fun part is that nothing appears to be clogging the opening, and the shakers are still quite full. The Winter Solstice

Today (December 21st, 2011) is the Winter Solstice, or shortest day of the year. Because of the axial tilt of our planet as it spins around the sun, this day marks the 24-hour period in which the Northern Hemisphere receives the least amount of sunlight, and coincidentally, warmth. Though the length of days will begin to increase from here, Winter will not be shaken so easily. We will not likely see a great deal of warming until the Vernal Equinox occurs, midway through March. Stay warm! (Click the image below for a larger version.)

Here’s a fun little video I made. It’s time-lapse of a project I’m working on for a production entitled Diversity Circus. It’s an illustration of a trick using a broom, where–if you keep your elbows bent–no one will be able to push you off your spot. Lots of physics going on here.

I don’t recall how many times I changed the color of the broom handle, but it’s pretty obvious I wasn’t pleased with the first few. Enjoy!

I was asked to put together a KIDSBILL for Music Theatre of Wichita, so I decided to try something new. I saw Bryan Ballinger (breadwig.com) doing some cool stuff with Maya, so I tried to replicate it in Adobe Illustrator, eventually winding up in Photoshop for some of the details. I really liked the “onstage” look of it.
