Inside the Statue of Liberty

Workers made
a central tower of
four vertical iron
beams. Holding
them together
were vertical and
horizontal iron
bars. Extending from
the tower were
hundreds of iron
bars. These bars
were attached to
a network of iron
“ribs” that were
bent to follow the
shape of the statue’s
inner surface.
The ribs were
then riveted to the
inside of Liberty’s
copper “skin.”
